Young Israel of Pembroke Pines is affiliated with the National Council of Young Israel. It is located within Century Village of Pembroke Pines, FL. The Shul opened in 1990 and grew as the Village was being built. Our present building was completed in 2002. A group of Orthodox Jews, mostly Holocaust survivors, refused to get a mortgage but dug into their own pockets to make this synagogue a reality. It houses the sanctuary, a social hall, kitchen, office and library. See photos of the Shul on the Photo Gallery page. We are an over age 55 community serving the needs of seniors in a dynamic setting.
We are the newest Century Village. The first one was in West Palm built in the early 1970s, then Boca, then Deerfield and then ours. The units nearest to the Shul were built in the late 1990s, larger in size than units in the older Century Villages and including such amenities as washers and dryers in the units (washers and dryers are not allowed in units in any other Century Village), a sophisticated medical alert system in each unit (you press the button on the wall of your bedroom and a registered RN comes to your unit 24/7), elevators in the buildings, and is physically well-run and better maintained in all areas. There is just no comparison.
This is "summer camp" for adults over age 55 except it is year-round. Want to take a class in computer, piano, tai chi, dancing, writing, etc., etc. or play cards in the large card room, or how about billiards in the large pool room, or see a first run movie, a Broadway show, or workout in the gyms, swim in the 23 pools, play tennis, sail, and so much more. Don't know anyone? Just put a smile on your face and you will find loads of new friends. There is so much to do from morning until evening and you can be as busy as you want or just relax in the lobby. There are countless clubs that meet and take trips, do lunch and make new friends: from the Coney Island Club to retired educators and everything inbetween. You can even take a chartered bus to the different casinos for the day. The monthly COOPPA newspaper comes to your door and lists all the activities for next month.
The membership in our Shul is a group who live here year round and "snow birds" who join us for the winters. Members are from different areas of the United States and local persons who downsized and purchased a condo within the Village. Everyone is welcomed and given help with the move to Century Village.
